The New River Valley’s WSLS 10 highlighted Girls Empowered at Mountain Shepherd this summer! The feature shows viewers that middle school girls are learning much more than wilderness survival skills during their week of camp; GEMS campers also develop skills that are transferable from the backcountry to the “frontcountry,” where navigating adolescence can be troublesome. The GEMS creators and staff believe that the opportunity to learn outdoors and to build upon metaphors connected to what’s going on in their “frontcountry” lives are essential to helping young girls be confident, courageous, and compassionate.
